A question that has been coming up a lot lately is what are the VIP KID hours like? Since Jo and I (Dom) have been traveling all over the place as digital nomads the past few years, we get asked these questions a lot: “How do you do it? How can you possibly afford to always travel and visit all these amazing places? How do I get started too?” And let us tell you this… It’s not. that. hard. If it’s something you desire, you can definitely make it happen!

So to quickly summarize, Jo works as a virtual assistant and project manager (you can learn more about that here VA POST). And I, Dom, teach English online with VIP KIP.  Alright, so now, let’s get to the point:

What are the hours like with VIP KID!?

Teaching online with VIP KID has made it possible for Jo and me to travel the world. VIP KID and their awesome hours has allowed us to go almost anywhere in the world. Some places are slightly easier to teach than others, but for the most part, teaching English online has been fantastic.

The toughest time zone I have been in has been the Pacific time zone. It has taken some adjusting to teaching those hours because of the time difference between here and China, but like most things in life, you just have to adjust and keep going.

Teaching with VIPKID from home.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to do roughly 25-30 hours a week with VIP KID which is great. It has given me the perfect work life balance and time for other hobbies and things I enjoy doing. My favourite part is not having to commute to and from work. So there is no extra time wasted. On of that the VIPKID pay is actually quite good for being able to work anywhere.

Hopefully, wherever you are, you can make these hours work and fit into your schedule. (Which I am sure you will. In most countries, the hours you will work aren’t too bad; Unless you’re like me and live in the Pacific (or Hawaiian) time zone. Then you may have some sleepless nights! 😉

VIP KID Hours in China

Since you’ll be teaching English online to Chinese students the majority of them will be in school during the day (BJT time). There are a few exceptions but besides that the busy hours will always be in the evenings and on the weekends (BJT time). These busy hours are called “peak hours.”

There are a few exceptions for why a student will book outside of the peak hours:

  1. You are certified in Level 1. Level 1 is the lowest level meaning you will be teaching students who are 3, 4, and 5 years old that don’t go to school yet. Especially students from cities like Hongkong, Shanghai, and Beijing will start learning English at a very young age.
  2. When Chinese New Year is coming up. This typically takes place during January and February. It’s a big Chinese festival that lasts roughly a month and lots of students who aren’t travelling will take extra English classes. So you will see students taking class in the morning and afternoon (BJT time) during this month.
  3. The last exception is for summer holidays. This, I find, is the best time to teach and make money with VIP KID. Lots of students will travel during the holidays but VIP KID has summer promotions and other fun incentives/events and you will notice a spike in your schedule if you open up.

With all that being said you can still stay busy with VIP Kid if you build a big enough following of students and have an available schedule. Being available when the students and their parents want to book is very important! I have been a VIP Kid teacher for over a year now with a constant schedule and I am always booked up.

Everything you need to know about VIP KID working hours

So to give you a little more background information about VIP Kid and their hours I will share some informative facts about the scheduling system and how it works and even exactly how much you can earn.

On top of that, I will break down the three different types of bookings and how the hours work in different time zones around the world. Since this is all online and there’s no need for a classroom you can travel with VIP KID and work wherever you go.

All classes are booked in 30-minute slots with 25 minutes teaching and 5 minutes feedback after class*.

Peak Peak Hours (PPT):
Monday to Sunday from 7pm – 9pm (BJT time) are the absolute best times to get booked as a VIP KID teacher. When you open your schedule try to open at least these two hours every day you wish to teach in order to start getting consistent students.

Peak Hours (Peak):
Monday to Friday from 6pm – 7pm (BJT time) and Saturday – Sunday from 9am – 7pm (BJT time) are also fairly busy and these slots will most likely book up once you start to build up your “list of” students. I’d say about 90% of my peak hour slots book up when I open them.

Regular Hours:
Monday to Friday from 8:30am – 6pm (BJT time) and Saturday – Sunday from 8:30am – 9am (BJT time) (Saturday and Sunday, anything after 9am is peak hours.). Your schedule might book up sometimes if one of the three reasons above occurs. I actually don’t mind teaching the little ones. Even though it takes a bit of energy those young students are awesome fillers.

If this seems a little confusing because of the time difference I will simplify it for you and show you what hours you’ll be working in different parts of the world to see what makes the most sense for you. You can find the most popular time zones below.

With that being said though you can definitely look forward to working 30+ hours a week if you’re motivated and want to do it as a more full time job. Or you can simply try to just work the Peak Peak slots (PPT) and use it as a little extra side income.

VIP KID hours in USA and Canada

So living in Canada for the past year, I have experienced the all-nighters and what it’s been like teaching in the mountain and pacific time zones. It was manageable but I definitely preferred my VIP KID schedule in Europe. In Canada, I was teaching lots of late evenings into the early morning and it definitely got exhausting but I made it work.

I actually do think the eastern or Atlantic time zones aren’t too bad. You’d maybe start at 5am but you’d be able to work until 10 or 11am which would be nice and then you could have the rest of the day off. I did this while we were in Mexico (before Corona chased us away 🙁 ) and it worked out quite well for me.

This is from March to November ish (During daylight savings time)
(China doesn’t do daylight savings so during the “winter season” your work schedule will change by 1 hour.)

VIP KID Hours in Europe

This is where my VIP KID journey started. While I was living in Prague with Jo in the spring of 2019 I started working for them and absolutely loved it.

The Vipkid hours were amazing because I was working the same hours as most regular teachers and office people. That meant that I was able to live my digital nomad life while still having the same time off as all my friends.

** The times below are Central European Summer Time which is from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October. **

VIP KID schedule

Everyone’s VIP KID schedule is going to look different depending on where you live and what kind of students you have.

Looking at the 3 different types of time slots available; PPT, Peak, and the standard time slots, I would say:

  • PPT will fill up about 95% of the time when you have a bunch of regular students.
  • Peak slots will fill up closer to 75% of the time.
  • Regular slots will fill up randomly but I would put it closer to 50% of the time.

These numbers are all based on my own experience with VIPKID and can change drastically from teacher to teacher.

Remember though, during the summer months and Chinese New Year and other holidays these numbers can pick up. If you’re looking to fill up your schedule I would try and get all the VIP KID certifications available to attract students of all ages. Some people don’t like teaching 3-4-year-olds but every once in a while it’s fun and they help fill your schedule.

From the time zones I mentioned above (popular ones where most teachers teach) you can see Europe is ideal time wise for your schedule. You can wake up, enjoy breakfast, teach, and be done by mid to late afternoon. This obviously isn’t the case living in the Mountain or Pacific time zone. So depending on your situation there are endless possibilities to what you can do to make teaching English online more convenient for you!

Teaching English Online

So as you can see from the charts above you can literally teach from absolutely anywhere as long as you have stable internet and a quiet place to teach. Teaching English online has enabled me to travel and work in some amazing places and hopefully, it will help you do the same.

It may not be as stable as a 9-5 job but living this digital nomad lifestyle makes you give up a sense of that stability and in return, you get the gift of being able to move freely and travel wherever you want.

I don’t think teaching English online is for everyone but I do think people should give it a try even if it’s for a few months to see the amazing perks that come from being able to work and travel from anywhere.

Other useful info

  • VIP KID does not have a minimum amount of hours you have to work. So you can pick and choose which hours work best for you and go from there.
  • A VIP KID contract lasts 6 months. A few weeks before your contract is up you can decide to renew it for another 6 months. Or you can finish out your current contract and finish with the company.
  • With this VIPKID pay calculator you can see exactly how much money you will earn each month. This way it will help you budget for the month and give you an idea how much you can make every month.
  • Remember VIP KID summer hours will change your schedule and lots of the regular hours will book up as well. Also, during Chinese New Year and other holidays you will see spikes in booking.
  • You can adjust your time zone in the VIP KID teacher portal. First, you go to account, click on your profile or picture, click on account information, and then click on contact information. From there you can edit your time zone.
  • There are tons of teaching jobs online but for myself, this has been one of the best paying online teaching jobs that I have had. I’ve had over a year to build up my student following but from the beginning, I have been teaching anywhere from 20 – 35 hours a week. This is perfect for my lifestyle especially in cheaper parts of the world like the Czech Republic. Even though Prague isn’t the cheapest place to live, the lifestyle is fantastic.
