During our US road trip we stayed at a bunch of campgrounds and campsites. With our trusty Honda Odyssey (Kona) we’ve explored a bunch of different states and national parks but there is one campground that really stands out. Camping at Lake Powell at the stunning Wahweap Campground in Page Arizona. It is hands down one of our favourite spots we’ve camped at and we don’t want you to miss it when you stop by Page.

Wahweap Campground is located right outside of Page Arizona and right next to the popular vacation spot, Lake Powell.

There are tons of fun things to do around and near the campground – you can check out some examples in this post of 11 Epic Things to Do in Page. The whole area is just full of breathtaking scenery! The famous Horseshoe Bend hike is one of the places and it’s only a 15-minute drive from the campsite!

We still reminisce about waking up with the red rock landscape in the background and Lake Powell a stone throw away. It’s such a magical place that we randomly stumbled upon at the last minute and now we want to share it with you so you don’t miss it!

Why you should go camping at Lake Powell

A guy standing outside at Wahweap Campground in Page Arizona.

I think the reason we both love Wahweap Campground so much is because it’s the perfect combination of a beautifully located campground and also full of amazing amenities. We found that most of the time while camping in the USA it’s hard to find both! This time while camping in Page we realized that we got the best of both worlds.

We were super impressed with the showers, and facilities it has. They even have free wifi that ACTUALLY WORKS!

It worked all the way to our campsite and not just in the lobby which was amazing. It’s nice having wifi because then you can plan some things to do during your stay in Page. For some inspiration we created a list of things to do in Page, Arizona.

Besides the wifi and the facilities, the campground is beautifully located next to Lake Powell and only a short drive to Page. It’s a great place to spend a few days to be able to do all the fun things in the area. Even some of the best hikes in Arizona are located in and around Page.

It’s a place you just have to experience for yourself. The stories and pictures don’t even do it justice. The best part of the whole thing is we didn’t even plan to camp at Wahweap so it was a total surprise that this campsite even exists next to Lake Powell.

We knew we wanted to stay in Page because it was next to the Horseshoe Bend Viewpoint, but besides that, we just lucked out and ended up here with pure luck. It’s a good thing to remember that some of the best memories aren’t planned and just randomly stumbled upon instead.

Amenities and booking Wahweap Campground

  • Tent sites
  • RV sites
  • Group sites
  • Drinking water
  • Flush toilets
  • Showers
  • Free wifi
  • Fire pits and picnic tables

Most of these sound like pretty basic amenities that most campgrounds should have but after doing our road trip we were quite surprised that this wasn’t the case.

For roughly $30 a night (tent site) it’s absolutely worth it. Plus you have the Wahweap Marina right next door which is a great place to go boating and explore Lake Powell!

Read the TripAdvisor reviews here.

Please note: To get to the campsite you will be entering the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area so you will have to pay the National Park fee to enter. The fee is $30 per week per vehicle or you can buy an America the Beautiful Pass online that is valid for all US National Parks for a full year. This pass costs $80 so you will quickly get your money’s worth!

We stayed in the second circle (see on the map) in a tent site because we were sleeping in our van and we had a beautiful view and great wifi. There were even bathrooms right across from our site.

All the information about booking, who to contact, prices, and anything else is on the map. It basically has everything you need to know to book a night or two at Wahweap.

If you’re looking for RV parking at Lake Powell this is as close as you’re going to get. If you have an RV and looking for a nice and spacious site you can find that at Wahweap.

There’s 3 activities that really stand out. You may not have time for all 11 but here are the 3 of the activities you can’t miss while visiting Page.

The view at the end of Horseshoe Bend Hike

#1 Horseshoe Bend

The picturesque Horseshoe Bend has had tourists coming for years and there’s no doubt why it’s been popular for so long. The famous view which overlooks the canyon and the river down below is something people come from all around the world to experience.

We made the mistake of going during the middle of the day when it was absolutely crowded. Ig you have the chance go for either sunrise or sunset and get some amazing shots of the Bend. There’s something special about watching the sunrise or sunset in the desert. Either way, you won’t be disappointed with this short and sweet hike to Horseshoe Bend Overlook.

Antelope Canyon X

You’ve probably heard of the amazing tours of Antelope Canyon that are run by the local tribes living in the area. Slot canyons are famous in the area and if you’re not sure what we’re talking about just do a Google image search “slot canyons Arizona” and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about.

The tours are usually booked months in advance and we found them to be quite expensive. However, we found another tribe “Antelope Canyon X” that started running tours too and they’re still more of a hidden gem. Groups are smaller and prices are cheaper.

So definitely check them out if you’re interested in exploring one of the slot canyons right outside of Page. Again, this is something you won’t really see anywhere else in the world and it’s definitely worth seeing while you’re exploring Arizona.

Visit the Navajo Village Heritage Center

It’s always nice to learn about the culture and history of a place you’re visiting. We find that it’s a good way to truly learn about an area and its people. In Page, you can go hear the stories about the tribes that have lived out in this desert for generations and generations!

You’ll hear stories and myths about their ancestors and what they’ve done to survive all these years in the desert. It’s such a fascinating experience. It gives you a whole new appreciation for the land and the people that live there. It made us fall in love with Page and the hikes we did even more.

Recap on camping at Wahweap Campground

View of Lake Lowell and the dam on a clear day.

We hope that with all this information you end up enjoying your time in Page and camping at Wahweap Campground. We went in early fall which was a fantastic time visit. The days were warm enough, then the evenings cooled off, and waking up in the morning actually wasn’t too cold.

So if we were to recommend a time to go we would definitely pick late August, September, and October. it will hopefully still be warm enough but not scorching hot like some of the other months so the days and nights will be a lot more enjoyable.

And don’t forget to buy your America the Beautiful Pass before you go! You can read more about it and buy one on REI here.

We mentioned our three favourite things to do around Page but there are a lot more hikes and outdoor activities to do in the area. You may want to spend at least 2-3 days in Page to be able to explore some of the beautiful places.

We hope you enjoy exploring the Navajo land and all the fascinating structures that have formed over time here in the desert. Some of America’s most majestic beauty is right here in Northern Arizona.
